I grew up in Eau Claire, WI. I attended St. Olaf College, graduating summa cum laude in 1984. Following graduation I traveled for two years: working on a farm in Norway, building houses in the Virgin Islands, waiting tables in Grand Marais, and ski-bumming in Jackson, WY. I went to law school at UW-Madison. After graduating with honors, I clerked for a Court of Appeals judge in Wausau. I then accepted a two year teaching fellowship at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington D.C., specializing in criminal defense work. I started with the Wisconsin State Public Defender in 1993 and retired from that agency in 2021.
I'm excited to begin this next chapter of my professional life as a private attorney, representing clients in Northwest Wisconsin who are charged with criminal offenses. Facing the power of the state with your freedom on the line is a scary and stressful situation to find yourself in. I appreciate that and will do my best to guide you through the legal system, getting the best results possible.
You may notice that I chose an unusual symbol for my logo. It's called the Helm of Awe, an ancient Norse symbol of protection. With my Norwegian heritage, I've long been interested in the history, stories, mythology, and language of the Viking era. The Helm of Awe perfectly symbolizes my commitment to protect you and do battle on your behalf.
